Food Trends: Coconut, offal and maple water?

It’s a popular pastime in the BrandHook office to chat about what’s going to be the next big thing in the food world. Recently we’ve seen burgers grown in labs, unusual but delicious flavour combinations (salted caramel, yum!) and Heston like discoveries such as fruit that looks like fruit but tastes like meat.

Many food trends add value in the broader sense like promoting environmentalism to supporting local vendors. While others make our life easier by shortening cook-time and allowing us to spend more time relaxing with those we love to serve. Some food trends, on the other hand, add a lot of hype to a product that perhaps doesn’t deserve the love it receives. I’m looking at you cronut.

We have spent the last month talking to our presumer panel about food trends in their countries. We thought we’d share some with you so you too can get ahead of the curve of all things food.

Coconut yoghurt (Hell, coconut everything!)

Offal is once again threatening to make it back into the mainstream with the continuing hunt for affordable, flavoursome meats that might previously have been hidden at the back of the sales counter. Pigs Trotters anyone?

Freekeh and teff

Never heard of them? Don’t worry, you will soon. They’re the latest in the ‘ancient grain’ trend our tip to be the next quinoa.

Say hello to maple water

If you’re still trying to develop a taste for coconut water, you might be interested in the latest “water” to hit the shelves: maple water. Maple water is made from the raw sap of sugar maple trees, and it is short on calories and long on vitamins.
